I had an error in the LSR command - the emulator appeared to work fine, but
refused to change to modes 1 and 5. Thats what makes me think you may have a
duff instruction (maybe just the operation of one flag...).

I have had a look at the others authors' source code (I know they have looked
at mine) and yes we all go about things differently :)
